Unparalleled in quality, the kit includes AAI factory ELITE beam fabric, specially crafted for a 16′ 3″ beam. Alongside this, you’ll find a durable rubber pad, perfectly tailored for a 16’3″ beam. We’ve also included (2) AAI Balance Beam End Caps, ensuring you have all the necessary components for a seamless recovery.
Before embarking on this transformative journey, it’s important to note that beam recovery is a task that requires teamwork. You’ll need a partner by your side, as well as a set of essential tools and materials. These include a 7/32″ Hex Key, Screwdriver, Hammer, Putty Knife, Utility Knife, Staple Gun, Rubber Hammer, and Adhesive. For optimal results, AAI recommends using 3M spray 90 or BF Goodrich S9000 adhesive.
Now, let’s dive into the step-by-step instructions for a successful beam recovery:
1. Begin by using the 7/32″ Hex Key to loosen and remove bolts from the bottom beam plates. Take out the steel end plates and the 8 small plates inside the beam.
2. With the help of pliers or vise grips, carefully remove the beam cover. Pay attention to the black foam strip on the top of the beam and ensure it is completely cleaned using a putty knife.
3. It’s time to recover the beam! Apply adhesive to both the beam and the widest side of the pad. Place the top pad on the beam, ensuring the wide side is facing down. Smooth it out meticulously to prevent any bubbles from forming.
4. Lay the beam cover upside down on a table. Center the beam, top side down, on the beam cover. Tilt the beam to expose the top and spray both the beam and the middle of the beam cover with glue. Wait for the glue to become tacky, then tip the beam onto its top and press firmly. Allow a few minutes for the glue to set.
5. Spray one side of the beam and the corresponding side of the beam cover with glue. Pay attention to the lips of the beam that the cover will fold around. Once the glue is tacky, pull up firmly on the cover and press it firmly onto the beam. This step requires the assistance of two people. Repeat the process for the opposite side.
6. Press the cover tightly down into the lips on the bottom of the beam. Use the handle edge of the utility knife to ensure a secure fit. Remove any excess cover by running your knife along the inside of the beam.
7. Spray glue inside the ends of the beam. Once the glue starts to become tacky, wrap the cover around the end of the beam and attach it to the inside. Use the utility knife to splice or notch the cover, creating a smooth wrap.
8. To reassemble the beam, attach the beam end plates to the small connection plates using the bolts you removed earlier. Screw the bolts into the plates, leaving them slightly loose for easy installation.
9. Attach the end cap assembly to the beam end plate and slide the end plate assembly into the beam until the plate and end cap are flush. Tighten the plate securely to the beam.
10. Finally, install the plastic center bracket by inserting one side under the lip of the beam. Use a rubber hammer to pound the other side down into place.
Congratulations! Your balance beam is now fully recovered and ready for use.
